“One of my favourite restaurants in Kilkenny. Cafe Sol is wonderful, the food is always fantastic. Great place for a group, they have a wide range available so you’re sure to find something to please everyone’s palate. Their set menus are incredible value. Their loyalty club is great as well, you get a free bottle of wine just for signing up, and a free mains on your birthday.”

Tripadvisor review of Cafe Sol Kilkenny
Thanks to ALG48 from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA for this latest review on www.tripadvisor.com.
“Superb food, great service, great value”
We were steered to Cafe Sol Bistro by the front desk person at the Pembroke Hotel, and then were further encouraged when we read the great reviews on Trip Advisor. We were not disappointed.
This small cafe is pleasant and unpretentious, with efficient but unhurried service by a single waiter who appeared to be looking after all the tables. The menu was fairly small — usually a good sign in that they just try to cook a few things and do them well.
We had a remarkable soup that was a puree of puree of carrot, leek, and some other seasonal vegetables, and was probably the best of its kind that I have ever tasted. Relatively simple but startlingly good.
Then we had a main course of fresh charred hake fillet that was simply outstanding. The fish was perfectly cooked, bursting with flavor, and truly delicious. Served with baby potatoes and a tomato compote.
The cost was very reasonable, and the whole experience was a delight. If you are visiting Kilkenny, Cafe Sol is a must.

We are delighted to tell you that Sol Bistro in Thomastown is now recommended in the Georgina Campbell Ireland Guide. Cafe Sol Kilkenny and Sol Bistro are now both recommended by the leading restaurant guides in the country, The Bridgestone Guide and Georgina Campbell’s Ireland Guide as well as a number of other travel guides.
“At Georgina Campbell Guides, independence is at the core of our philosophy and we have always selected establishments for recommendation on merit alone. Using the respected and trusted method of anonymous assessment – by experienced assessors, who pay their bills like anyone else – we reach our own conclusions and only pass on recommendation for the best establishments visited.
Unlike most so called “Guidebooks” and “Guide Sites” – most of which list only those establishments that not only fit the entry criteria but are also are willing to pay the exorbitant entry fees that enable them to write or approve their own stories – WE DO NOT CHARGE FOR ENTRY. Our selections are made on merit – and we visit many other establishments each year that we choose not to recommend.”
“Bridgestone Guides “Best in Ireland’ means exactly was it says on the plaque, and if you see an up-to-date plaque displayed by an establishment, it is your guarantee that the people involved are providing the very best service possible, whether they are a fishmonger selling at a farmers’ market, or a pub with interesting food, a real bakery, or a hip, happening restaurant.”

I am writing following my dining experience at Sol Bistro, Thomastown, last Thursday the 10th February 2011 – I would like to say thank you for such a lovely evening. My partner and I were staying in Mount Juliet for a few days and knew that Sol Bistro had been positively reviewed so we decided to give it a try. We were so impressed we found ourselves talking about our meal all weekend so I felt I had to email to let you know.
I had the pasta of the day while my partner had a chicken dish and we both had chocolate fondant for dessert – I believe it was the first day of the new menu. The food hugely surpassed our expectations but the service in particular delighted us. The gentleman serving us that evening was very charming and extremely helpful – I got the sense that he truly appreciates good food and this really shone through. The atmosphere was also highly pleasant – very relaxed and romantic and set us up for a wonderful stay in Kilkenny. We felt that we received excellent value and will definitely return next time we visit Thomastown or Kilkenny city.
Please pass this message on to the Thomastown bistro staff as we really felt they provided us with a magical culinary experience.
Thank you again,
Susan
