Sol Bistro is located in the centre of Thomastown on Low Street, just up from the Post office and between O'Hara's and Eddie Murphy's.

Cafe Sol is an intimate bistro style restaurant located in the heart of the mediaeval city of Kilkenny, within a few minutes walk of the major Kilkenny City hotels such as The Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel, The Kilkenny Hibernian Hotel, The Kilkenny Rivercourt Hotel, The Kilkenny Inn, The Langton House Hotel, Zuni Townhouse and Hotel Kilkenny.

Our cuisine may be described as contemporary Irish with a Mediterranean influence. We use fresh local produce such as Lavistown sausage and cheese, Kilkenny beef and Ballon free range eggs. We offer quality food and wine with friendly service in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Open for lunch and for evening dinner seven days a week, we run occasional theme nights and regular Wine Tasting Dinners. For events and other news please see our news page. You can contact us here.

The restaurants are available for private hire and can accommodate up to 50 people. We can organise live music for your event; choose from Harp, Jazz Trio, String Quartet and more! For more information please call Noel direct on 087-6839958.

What they say about Cafe Sol

We are recommended in several guides including:

Bridgestone Guide 2008 logo The team work hard on sourcing, and they deliver with good cooking...A confident signature style is really emerging here, and the people of Kilkenny are flocking to it."
Bridgestone Guide 2010
Georgina Campbell 2009 logo

“...a very popular daytime Cafe and evening restaurant, warmly decorated in yellow and terracotta...This is an interesting restaurant, offering something different from the ‘sameness’ of so many menus, and at reasonable prices”

Arguably the best place to eat in Kilkenny, whether you want a quick lunch or a leisurely evening meal. The emphasis is on fresh, local ingredients; there's plenty of fish on the menu and always some good vegetarian options."

Menu and Sourcing

Recognising the seasons in the daily menu is important to us. We source all our produce as locally as possible. This both supports local artisan food producers who make quality products, and provides us with nutritious and tasty ingredients for our menu.

One such producer is Olivia Goodwillie who produces Lavistown sausage, a delicious gourmet pork sausage. Fish is fresh from Dunmore East and we use free range eggs in our kitchen. All chicken and beef used in the restaurant is 100% Irish.
